JORDI SOCÍAS IN CHICAGO
June 5 to November 30 , 2012 / Instituto Cervantes de Chicago
31 W. Ohio St.
60654 Chicago Illinois
Jordi Socías (Barcelona, 1945) is one of the key names in the evolution of photojournalism in Spain. Influenced by international masters such as Cartier-Bresson and Avedon, Socías´ style is representative of several generations of reporters. From the 70’s onward he has collaborated with the most renowned Spanish magazines and newspapers. Maremagnum is a retrospective of Spain’s transition to democracy, surreal images, and snapshots of every day city life. The main part of the exhibit contains a gallery of portraits that reflect Socías’ personal view on major figures of Spanish and European culture during the past four decades.
For the event on Tuesday, June 5 at 6pm, Jordi Socías will be joined by Chicago's Steve Schapiro for a discussion about their work and experiences.
Mr. Schapiro's images have graced the covers of Vanity Fair, Time, Life, and Paris Match. Active in the Civil Rights movement in the1960s, Schapiro documented marches and protests, and was called to Memphis by Life magazine after the assignation of Martin Luther King, Jr. His are iconic images of that tragic event. The Apollo Theater, Haight-Ashbury and the presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy are other of his subjects. Since the 1970s Schapiro has documented the making of over 200 films including The Godfather, Taxi Driver, The Way We Were and Risky Business. He has photographed Barbra Streisand, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Samuel Beckett, Muhammad Ali, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Robert Redford, and Cher.
